Contrast-Free Coronary Artery Imaging & Full Visualization of Urinary Tract: Innovative Applications of MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is widely known for being radiation-free and delivering clear images, safe for pregnant women and children. It is a popular choice for physical examinations and disease screening at Amcare. Beyond whole-body tumor screening, MRI excels at detecting lesions in the brain, liver, prostate, uterus and other organs. It has even become the gold standard for diagnosing gastrointestinal diseases, mediastinal soft tissue disorders and more.

Now two advanced MRI techniques are widely applied here: Magnetic Resonance Coronary Angiography (MRCA) and Magnetic Resonance Urography (MRU).

1. MRCA: Contrast-Free & Radiation-Free Coronary Artery Examination

Conventional Coronary Computed Tomographic Angiography (CCTA) requires contrast medium and exposes patients to radiation, usually taking around 20 minutes and involving multiple hospital visits.

By contrast, Amcare’s MRCA visualizes coronary arteries directly without contrast agents or radiation. It eliminates risks of drug allergy and contrast extravasation, and the whole screening takes roughly 20 minutes on the day of appointment.

Equipped with a 70cm large-bore scanner and noise reduction technology, it brings great comfort to patients with claustrophobia. We can safely adjust heart rate with mild medication if needed.

Adopting GE Signa Voyager AIR MRI system, MRCA achieves over 95% consistency rate compared with CCTA. Two modes are available:

  • Screening Mode: 20-minute quick scan for asymptomatic people for routine coronary assessment.

  • Precision Mode: 30–40 minutes with higher image quality, ideal for symptomatic patients or those requiring more accurate results.

Note: MRCA cannot detect vascular calcification. Further CCTA may be recommended if coronary stenosis is suspected for a definitive diagnosis.

2. MRU: Full Dynamic Visualization of the Urinary Tract

Ultrasound and CT have limitations in examining the ureter. Ultrasound hardly displays the middle segment of the ureter, while CT fails to produce clear images when the ureter is not dilated. This poses challenges for preoperative evaluation and postoperative follow-up of children with congenital urinary tract malformations such as duplicated renal pelvis and duplicated ureter.

Magnetic Resonance Urography (MRU) solves this problem. It stimulates water molecules in the body via magnetic field to clearly display the entire urinary system, including renal calyces, renal pelvis, ureters and bladder.

  • Non-invasive, no contrast injection, friendly for children.

  • Supports multi-angle and 3D rotational viewing for intuitive observation.

This technique plays a vital role in preoperative diagnosis and postoperative assessment of urinary tract disorders. We have completed numerous pediatric MRU scans successfully, with all children undergoing the exam safely without contrast agents, allergy risks or radiation exposure.

More Than Advanced Technology: Upgraded Medical Services

Though CT and ultrasound are faster for coronary and urinary tract checks, we keep optimizing MRI protocols to deliver safer and gentler examinations. It is especially suitable for women trying to conceive, pregnant or breastfeeding women, young kids, patients with contrast allergy or renal insufficiency, and anyone who prefers low-risk testing.

We are also expanding MRI applications, including bone mineral density testing, differentiation of endometriosis and ovarian chocolate cysts, and 3D cephalopelvic measurement for fetuses in late pregnancy.

Patients can enjoy comprehensive services at Amcare:

  1. Appointment-based service: Examinations are generally arranged on the booking day with no long waiting.

  2. Efficient scanning: With integrated large coils and high-channel technology, a full MRI sequence takes only 35–40 minutes. A cranial scan for a 1.5-year-old child took just 7 minutes in our practice.

  3. Comfortable experience: 70cm large bore and noise reduction design create a spacious, quiet environment.

  4. MDT report interpretation & online expert consultation: Radiologists and clinicians review images together. Online consultation with senior experts is available for abnormal findings.

  5. Provincial report recognition: Our reports are recognized by other hospitals across the province to avoid repeated tests.

Diagnosis is the foundation of treatment. An ideal imaging test should be both accurate and safe. MRI makes complex examinations simpler and more reassuring with no contrast agents or radiation.

No single imaging modality fits all cases, and the final choice will be decided by doctors based on individual conditions. We will keep refining our techniques to deliver professional and considerate medical services for every patient.
